Super Awesome Skin Cream

The following recipe is for a product that I’ve been using regularly since I found out that I was pregnant five years ago. It started out as a DIY stretch mark cream, progressed into a lotion, then was adopted as a facial moisturizer, and the rest is history.

Jars of it have been strategically placed around our house since then, especially as the number of uses I’ve found for it have increased.

The thing I love about this (besides being so soothing on my skin) is that it’s really inexpensive to make and a batch will last a really long time.

I can’t even begin to estimate how much this product has saved me over time. Things like facial moisturizers and stretch mark creams are so incredibly expensive. Heck, the savings of buying (and then replacing) several tubes of chapstick every winter alone would cover the cost of one batch.

Isn’t it a pretty color?

Here are the 10 things I’ve used this for, largely eliminating all others of the sort in our household.

  1. Stretch mark cream

This is how I was first introduced to this concoction and it worked wonders! Two babies later I only have a couple of small lines over my belly button (I continued use after baby, as well). There are no “tiger stripes” to be seen and I have no qualms in wearing a bikini in the summer.

I used this every morning on my belly and olive oil every night.

2. Hand and foot lotion

This was a natural transition after slathering my belly everyday. It’s a hearty formulation — perfect for dry winter weather.

3. Chapstick

I still keep a tube or two around, but I don’t use it nearly as often as I used to.

4. Facial moisturizer

When the company I ordered my facial moisturizer from discontinued my favorite product, I decided to try this out on my face. Four years later, I’m still using it.

5. Hair conditioner

This offers a nice softness as well as some sheen. Use lightly.

6. Nipple cream

Breastfeeding is rough! This hearty cream will help with healing and the ingredients are baby safe. (But please consult your doctor if you have any hesitation.)

7. Diaper cream

I love that the beeswax in this creates a nice barrier to help keep baby’s bum safe.

8. Cradle cap remover

Put some on and let it sit. Lightly scrub with a little more after 15 minutes and cradle cap will be gone.

9. Makeup remover

This works wonders in breaking down abrasive mascara.

10. Sunburn cream

Aloe is so soothing and cooling, but it has no staying power! This concoction has beeswax, coconut oil, and healing vitamin E.

So here’s the recipe:

3/4 – 1 c. olive oil

1 c. coconut oil

½ c. shea butter (I’m partial to this one by Alaffia)

½ c. beeswax pellets/pastilles

12-15 vitamin E capsules or approx. 2 teaspoons liquid vitamin E

10-15 drops essential oil (optional)

Tip: If you opt for the vitamin E capsules, they won’t melt, so cut the top off of the capsules with a scissors and squeeze out the liquid.

Melt all the ingredients over low heat in a saucepan and store in glass jars.

I’m partial to these small canning jars or these pint-sized jars.  The small ones are great for gift giving or for keeping in various places around the house (i.e. in the nursery, next to the bed, in the bathroom); the larger ones are great if you plan to make it for personal use and to keep it in one central location. Either way, the large mouth and shallow container is key. (I also love the small jars for toddler snacks on the go.)

Whether you choose to make this as a stretch mark cream for pregnancy or fully adopt it as your go-to moisturizer, I’m sure you’ll find that it perfectly suits your needs for soft, supple skin without overspending.

I’d love to know how you like it! Tell me in the comments below!
