Inexpensive, DIY Wedding Hairpiece

So you’re getting married…. Congratulations!

Weddings can be so fun!

And such a headache to plan….

And so expensive….

Okay, I’ll try not to be a downer. Weddings really aren’t my thing, but gettin’ hitched is an exciting time! I loved our wedding and found a number of ways to cut costs. The last thing I needed was to look around our reception and see nothing but dollars dancing the night away (I can’t help it; I’m an accountant by trade).

One of my favorite parts about planning our wedding was finding my dress. This is a whole other story, but my eventual husband hadn’t even proposed when I bought it. None-the-less, I knew it was “the dress” so I drug my mom to the store and the rest is history. (Seriously, I swear that angels sung from the heavens when I saw it in the window. I couldn’t deny it its destiny.)

So needless to say, I loved my dress. The moment I saw it, I knew exactly what I was going to look like on my wedding day. I could envision my hair, the dress, the shoes, the nails, the make up, my jewelry. I couldn’t wait to find all the details to make it reality.

And then I couldn’t find it.

I couldn’t find the perfect hair piece. I looked at local shops, bridal stores, and jewelry stores. I considered other options; I considered compromising; and then I did what I should have done from the beginning:

I crafted.

While wandering the aisles of a Michael’s craft store, I stumbled upon little white flowers in the bin at the end of their wedding section, and when I saw them, the pieces came together. I grabbed a couple of these little floral picks, a bag of feathers, some hair clips, and headed home.

Of all the things that you can do to cut pennies from your wedding costs, this is by far one of the simplest. And if you have a crafty bone in your body, you can absolutely do this.

Supplies
  • Hair piece of choice (headband, barrette, clip)
  • Felt (the rigid felt would work wonderfully to support the weight of your items on wider pieces)
  • Hot glue
  • Decorations: silk flowers, feathers, buttons, beads, tulle, ribbon, glitter spray, rhinestones — whatever you want! Wanna stick a little Yoda figurine in there? Go for it!

Step 1: Determine size and cut your felt

This is possibly the most difficult part, as it’s all estimation. You don’t want to cut it too large or too small. On the bright side, you can always trim it up or remake it; there’s not much invested.

Step 2: Glue, glue, glue!

Just layer your decorations appropriately. Bulk items, filler, then toppers. Snip any excess wires from your picks before gluing (but leave enough flex for adjustment). Also, be sure to hold any beads with a pliers when applying hot glue to avoid burns!

For this one I did flowers first!
After the flowers, then the feathers and the pearl beads.

Step 3: Stitch

For some items, stitching may work better than gluing, especially if you have a lot of fill and you want them on top. The last thing you want is blobs of glue showing or weighing down your fluffy feathers or ribbons.

Step 4: Attach

Hot glue that piece of felt onto your clip, barrette, or headband. Hot glue is wonderfully pliable, so you don’t really need to worry about it cracking or falling off.

Step 5: Wear!

Enjoy your beautiful new hairpiece!

I hope that your piece turned out exactly as you imagined. If not, you can always try again. No matter what, it’s going to cost less than buying one at a bridal store. 😉

Enjoy your day and please let me know how your project turned out in the comments below!
