8 Totally Logical Reasons to Switch to a Menstrual Cup

I’m so glad you’re here! If you’re reading this it means that you’re probably looking into trying out a menstrual cup. I can’t even begin to tell you what a game changer it is. (For real! SO. AMAZING.)

When I first got a menstrual cup, I was a little nervous. They seemed so daunting! But after my first full cycle, I was completely sold. Why use one?

  1. Safety

First of all, cups are healthier than tampons. The one I use is 100% silicone, so no chemicals leaching into my system. There’s also a reduced chance of toxic shock syndrome.

2. They’re comfortable

When inserted properly, I cannot feel my cup inside me. On slow flow days, I’ll even forget that I have it in until I go to bed.

3. They’ll save you a ton of money on products

There are a lot of varieties of cups, but no matter what you spend, it will be substantially less than months and months on end of tampons and pads. A quality cup can last for many years.

When I first invested, I didn’t realize that they had super inexpensive options at places like Walgreens. I love my cup, but for my first go-around I probably would’ve invested in something a little bit less expensive. Fortunately, I was convinced I was going to (and do) love it.

4. They’re available for every body type

Cups come in all shapes and sizes (and colors, too!)

High cervix? Low cervix? Had a baby? Just a teenager? Heavy flow? No worries! There’s one out there for you. There’s a super fantastic cup educational site called Put a Cup In It that has a quiz that can match you with just the cup you need.

5. They’re environmentally responsible

Months upon months and years upon years of hygiene products add up! One small cup has a much smaller impact when you do finally dispose of it. Pair it with a simple flannel DIY pantiliner and waste is next to nothing.

6. They’re perfect for guesswork

Even if your cycle is like clockwork, you likely can’t pinpoint the time of day that Aunt Flo will arrive. No worries! Put in your cup and go the day without questioning whether or not you’ll have to excuse yourself from a meeting or hunt down a rest stop on a road trip.

7. Fewer trips to the bathroom

Ya know what I don’t miss? Going to the bathroom every three hours to switch products. On a heavy day with a cup, I can go six hours before emptying it. On the average to light day, it’s 8-12 hours.

And finally, one of the biggest bonuses:

8. No more pee-soaked string!

Need I say more?

Still unsure? I get it; it’s daunting. You’ve probably heard someone’s horror story. (“It looked like a murder scene!”) There’s definitely a learning curve. But I can assure you that after a cycle or two, you’ll become totally comfortable using one and it’ll be no big deal.
