Facials sound like an extravagant expenditure — and they can be if you go to a spa — but you can still reap the benefits of the self care and the attention to your skin from home for a [very small] fraction of the cost with a few simple household products.
The key to a good facial is to follow the steps in the right order:
- Wash
- Exfoliate
- Steam
- Mask
- Toner
- Moisturize

I list some inexpensive options in this post that will keep you from spending on costly commercial products, but by all means, use what you like or have on hand, or try making your own. (I’ve found some really great ideas on Pinterest.) These are just great substitutions if you’re short an item.
I love using items from around my house for skincare — especially from the kitchen. I mean, afterall, if I’m willing to eat it, right?
Wash
I’m totally guilty of using whatever soap I have on hand to wash my face, but I’ve found that castile soap or baby soaps can be a bit more gentle. Just remember to pat (not wipe) dry.
Exfoliate
I used to invest in commercial scrubs until I learned this hack: baking soda. Just make a simple paste with a little water and gently massage onto your face. Rinse & pat dry.
(I do, however, love making my own body scrubs for myself and as gifts.)
Steam
Boil water and put it in a large heat resistant bowl. Sit with a towel over your head and enjoy the calming heat.
Looking for some aromatherapy? Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil or a sprinkle of your favorite dried herbs from your kitchen (I love rosemary or cloves and cinnamon).
Mask
The mask is my favorite part: toning, tightening, & renourishing are so important and my skin feels so good afterward.
I generally stick with good ol’ fashioned egg whites (applied with a cotton ball) (have you ever tried it?), but there are so many other combinations out there including honey, oatmeal, aloe, yogurt, oils. Interested? Start your search for ideas here!
Toner
After you’ve rinsed off your mask, use a refreshing toner. If you don’t keep a toner on hand, try witch hazel or hydrogen peroxide to keep your pores in tiptop shape.
Moisturize
To keep your skin soft & supple, don’t forget to moisturize! I’ve been using this DIY product for years. It’s rich, versatile, and inexpensive. It also jumpstarted an interest in making my own DIY products, as well as my confidence in doing so.
After you’ve finished your facial, go enjoy a good book, a relaxing cup of your favorite herbal tea, and then get a good night’s sleep! Afterall, rest and hydration are two of the best things you can do for your skin.
What’s your favorite act of self care? Do you make any of your own skincare products? I’d love to hear. Tell me in the comments below!
